An experienced graphic designer and illustrator
Ron Wise has been working as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator for over 25 years to further his passion for creating powerful and functional images and designs that effectively communicate to the client’s audience.
Ron is passionate about art and design. He was always drawing from an early age, and he knew he wanted a career where he could draw by the time he was in high school. He enrolled in the Commercial Art and Design program at Vincennes University and never looked back. Since 1982, Ron has been working in the business of graphic design and illustration in one form or anther. After freelancing for a few years after graduating from V.U., he began working for Rowe and Field in Evansville, Indiana as a graphic designer. Under the tutelage of his mentor, Ben Field, he began to grow as a designer and illustrator soaking up all the knowledge that he could from Ben. Ben Field had his master’s in graphic design from Yale, having studied under renowned designers like Josef Albers and Herbert Matter, as well as having worked for Benton and Bowles on Madison Avenue in the early 1960’s. Ben was a stickler for type, and Ron learned a great deal about how to make type work for communication. After Ben’s retirement, Ron became art director at Rowe Advertising and ran the creative department there for a number of years.
In 1999, an opportunity to teach full-time arose in the Graphic Design department at Vincennes University, and Ron saw this as a way to share his knowledge and experience with young people just starting on their careers in design. Ron’s passion for teaching students about the finer points of design and illustration rivals his own passion for drawing and design. He continues to work at V.U. and is currently Chair of the Art and Design department. Ron finds that the passion for learning and creating by his students feeds his own creativity and passion for design. Although he teaches full-time, Ron still has time to work on freelance design projects for his clients. He finds that doing this work keeps his teaching more pertinent to better prepare his students for their careers. Mainly focusing on print media, Ron concentrates on page layout design and branding, but is also a quite capable illustrator. His past experience in these areas have allowed him to produce high level, professional work for clients since 1997. He is eager to continue to work as a designer in the future and would love to help you with your next project.
